I was in conversation recently with an acquaintance who has nothing at all to do with the automotive sector. After the initial niceties, the conversation came onto what our company Opus International Products actually did. He knew it was something to do with making car parts, but not much beyond that. It got me thinking about our elevator pitch, and how I would describe the company’s line of work should I have to summarise it into a single Tweet.
So this article seeks to give a brief overview of the services we provide and how our parts are used in premium automobiles.

OPUS are a leading supplier of high quality automotive interior, exterior and body sealing products to the premium automotive sector.
In 133 characters (114 without spaces) this sums it up pretty well. We work with some of the world’s leading manufacturers of high performance vehicles to produce precision components – often to non-standard tolerances and specifications.
Challenges Faced By The Premium Automotive Sector
Some of our clients produce prestige vehicles and supercars. Others are involved in the next generation of automobile technology, including electric vehicles, hybrid cars and other experimental vehicles. It’s an exciting industry to be part of. Our clients are very diverse but they all have one thing in common: none of them are mass-market companies. The number of vehicles they put to market each year is quite low.
This puts our clients in a tricky situation. Most companies that produce components for the automotive sector cater for mass production clients, such as Volkswagen, Renault, Ford etc. True to the economy of scale, components are designed and produced in bulk, allowing the supplier to offer low prices per unit on standard components.
This business model is not well adapted to produce the low volume, non-standard parts required by our clients. For a high-volume supplier to suddenly switch to low volume output with bespoke tooling, they would have to either drastically hike their prices or extend their lead time. More often than not, they simply refuse service.
